You don’t need a big backyard to grow your own food! Many vegetables thrive in pots and planters, making container gardening perfect for patios, balconies, decks, and small spaces.

Choose the Right Spot
Most vegetables need 8+ hours of sunlight daily. Greens like lettuce and spinach can tolerate less.

Use Containers with Drainage
Always choose pots with drainage holes to prevent roots from sitting in water.

Use Quality Potting Mix
Use a good potting soil, not garden soil or topsoil, which can compact in containers.

Pick the Right Size Pot

• 5 gallon containers: Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, pole beans, and eggplant
• 2-3 gallon containers or window boxes: Lettuce, herbs, radishes, and greens

Feed Your Plants
Add slow release fertilizer at planting time and top dress with worm castings throughout the season.

Water Consistently
Containers dry out quickly, especially in summer heat, so check them daily.
