Refresh Your Hanging Baskets & Patio Planters! If your hanging baskets or patio planters are looking a little shaggy or out of shape, don't worry! A little mid-season maintenance will have them looking beautiful again for the rest of the summer.
1. Give Them a Haircut As much as we love to see our plants grow, they can sometimes become a little leggy. Trim plants such as verbena, petunias, and million bells back by about one-third. This encourages branching, resulting in fuller plants with even more blooms.
2. Deadhead Regularly Removing spent flowers may take a little time, but it makes a huge difference. Deadheading instantly freshens up your planters and encourages continued blooming. If plants are allowed to produce seeds, they often slow down or stop flowering, so be sure to remove any seed heads as well.
3. Fertilize for Continuous Blooms If you haven't started fertilizing yet, now is the perfect time. We recommend using a water-soluble fertilizer twice a week for containers in full sun and once a week for those in shady locations. During hot weather, frequent watering washes nutrients out of the soil. Regular fertilizing replaces those nutrients, helping plants produce healthy foliage and continuous blooms all season long.
4. Check for Pests While Pruning Whenever you're trimming your plants, take a moment to inspect them for pests. Aphids love tender new growth, especially on million bells. If you spot any, treat them with an insecticidal soap to keep your plants healthy.
5. Water Deeply During Hot Weather A quick splash of water isn't enough during the heat of summer. Water thoroughly so moisture reaches the entire root ball. If the soil has become extremely dry, it may shrink away from the sides of the pot, causing water to run straight through without soaking the roots. If this happens, submerge the entire pot in a bucket of water for 20 to 30 minutes. This will rehydrate the soil and allow the roots to absorb water properly again.
