How to Divide Peonies in the Fall

Early fall is a great time to divide established peonies. Peonies can live for many years without being divided, but if a plant has become too large, is producing fewer blooms, or you simply want to create more plants, dividing is a great option.

Start by cutting the foliage back to about 6 inches. Carefully dig around the entire plant and lift the root clump from the ground. Gently remove excess soil so you can clearly see the roots and the small pink or reddish buds, called eyes.

Using a clean, sharp knife, divide the root into sections. Each new section should have at least 3 to 5 healthy eyes and a good portion of root attached.

Replant in a sunny, well drained location with the eyes no more than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface. Planting peonies too deeply is one of the most common reasons they fail to bloom. Water thoroughly after planting and give them a little patience. Newly divided peonies may take a season or two to return to their full blooming potential.
