Think Spring – Plant Your Fall Bulbs Now!
Happy September! Think spring (ha ha) — now is the perfect time to start planning your spring garden by planting spring-blooming bulbs. These include tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, and many more, blooming from March through June.
Bulbs are one of the easiest ways to add colour to your spring garden. Simply dig a hole to the recommended depth (2–8 inches, depending on the bulb), place the bulbs in, cover them up, and water. That’s it!
If squirrels are a problem — they’re often attracted to freshly dug planting sites — cover the area with blood meal fertilizer. If that doesn’t work, place a piece of chicken wire just above the bulbs in the hole to keep them safe.
Spring-flowering bulbs look best when planted in groups of five or more. The mass of brilliant colour will both impress and delight you. For the longest display, choose a mix of early, mid, and late-season bloomers.
After blooming, allow the foliage to die down naturally. This process feeds the bulb and encourages even more flowers next year. Adding bonemeal to your garden will also promote strong roots and healthier blooms.
Finally, if deer are a concern in your area, plant daffodils or narcissus — they’re toxic to deer and won’t get eaten.
