Dealing with Heat Waves and Flagging Hydrangeas
We had our first intense heat wave last week, and many of us noticed our hydrangeas—especially the mopheads, but also the Annabelle and peegee (Limelight) types—wilting in the hot sun. Our instinct, of course, is to water them, but sometimes that’s the worst thing we can do!
Before watering your hydrangea, do the “knuckle test.” Simply insert your finger into the soil up to your second knuckle (about 2"). If the soil feels dry, give your plant a good soak. But if it feels cool and moist, just wait a while—once the intense heat and sun have passed, your hydrangea should perk right up.
It’s very important to check before watering, as excess water can cause root rot. If that happens, your hydrangea will have an even harder time enduring heat waves.
